A daring robbery occurred in Ballina on
Monday night last, when the proceeds of a dramatic performance given by the Foxford Dramatic Club were seized and
carried off by armed raiders. The club was on the occasion staging the famous
Irish play, “Knocknagow,” to raise funds for some local purposes in Foxford.
The entertainment, which was well patronised, was drawing to a close when a
number of undisguised young men appeared at the door, and, covering the young
men in charge of the collection with revolvers, seized the cash box consisting
of receipts, which they stated they wanted for a certain purpose. They
immediately decamped, discharging a number of shots outside the hall. The young
man at the door was so dumbfounded by the cool proceedings that he did not
raise the alarm until some minutes afterwards, and the majority of the people
present in the hall were unaware of the occurrence until after the conclusion
of the performance. It is stated that there was about £80 in the cash box. The
young man in charge of the collection was unable to identify any of the
raiders, but it is stated that they were recognised by some bystanders, and
hopes are entertained that they may be speedily brought to justice.
